While hair loss is a natural result of aging, there are reasons to worry when your hairline starts to slowly disappear. Millions of dollars are spent each year on hair loss treatments, no matter at what age or levels of hair loss. Unfortunately, men suffering from male pattern baldness or who are genetically pre-disposed to suffer hair loss will go bald inevitably. But they shouldn’t feel so helpless, as there are treatments and remedies that can slow down the balding process. In any case, it is important to act sooner rather than later. The longer one waits, the more complicated and expensive the treatment or solution will be.

A study on hair loss claims that around two-thirds of American men are likely to have thinning hair by the time they turn 35. In most cases, the onset of the problem is initially observed in their twenties. The earlier the hair thinning, the more likely the individual will be bald by the time they are in their 40s.

Toupees or hairpieces are an option, though generally not a popular one, considering the chances of embarrassing moments of ‘slips’ and ‘misses’. In addition, it can be highly uncomfortable and can require more maintenance than most men are willing to commit to, such as the upkeep of toupees, and the time it takes to put them on properly so they look natural.

For all those who are looking for other options but settling for hairpieces, Bosley Medical suggests the following steps:

- Determine the cause of hair loss

The cause of baldness and hair loss varies for each person. Whether you are vulnerable to male pattern hair loss, heredity plays a pivotal role. Also, an underlying illness left untreated, or just simply high stress levels can lead to hair loss.

- Act Now

Nobody turns bald in a day. While the process of hair loss is gradual, the intensity of the problem increases if the problem is ignored. The sooner you act the better.

- Limit use of chemical products or hair tools.

While our dependence on hair products and solutions cannot be avoided, it is best to use mild products, and limit its use when possible. Using hair strengtheners and hair colors too frequently, or gadgets like flat irons or hair-dryers on a daily basis can make your hair brittle, and damage your roots.

Hair loss is experienced by most, if not all, men at some point in their lives. Fortunately, physique dictates that lost hair is designed to be replaced with new tresses of hair. The cause of concern is that the process of regrowth slows down as the body ages.

Generally, men are more vulnerable to this problem than woman. Be it hair growth or hair loss, heredity plays a pivotal role, and acts as a determining factor in the renewal process. This is the reason why baldness hits different people at different ages. Aside from hereditary hair loss such as Androgenetic Alopecia (male pattern baldness), environmental pollution, stress, anxiety, and excessive use of chemicals can also be major triggers of hair loss.

While there is no magic pill that can fix this problem of baldness, there are ways in which the process of hair loss can be decelerated. Here are a few tips from Bosley Medical, the world’s most experienced hair restoration expert. The tips are:

Ø Follow a healthy diet:

Since hair is essentially made of proteins, a balanced and healthy diet consisting of different kinds of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, and eggs can lead to healthier hair. Food rich in fatty acid and protein is also recommended.

Ø Stay hydrated

Proper hydration is important to keep your hair strong and lustrous. A lack of water is the main cause of hair brittleness, breakage and dullness. It is also important to reduce the intake of sugar, and caffeineated beverages that lead to dehydration.

Ø Get enough sleep

Experts claim that a lack of sleep can lead to stress, and be a root cause of major health problems. A minimum of eight hours of sleep is recommended. Sleep alleviates stress, and provides energy to the body, enabling it to nourish hair and strengthen its growth.

Ø Switch to mild hair products & gadgets

The overuse of shampoos, conditioners, hair- dryers, and strengtheners can be detrimental to hair growth and quality. Hair appliances such as hair dryers can overheat your hair, making it brittle and weak. While it is impossible to eliminate usage, use only when required, and switch to mild products.

Ø Go for a walk

A brisk walk can suprisingly be very beneficial for hair growth. Exercises like walking can promote blood circulation, especially on the scalp, increasing the flow of nutrients to the hair follicles.

Washing hair is something that most people do daily. While it may seem very simple and basic to us, many do not know that it is possible to actually do more harm than good to your hair through the simple act of washing hair.

Research conducted on shampoo use frequency found that most people wash their hair with shampoo an average of 4.59 times a week. Experts who looked deeper into the study claimed that this is more than necessary to maintain clean and healthy hair. There is no right or wrong way to wash your hair, per se. Bosley believes that it is important for an individual to understand their own hair washing requirements, and only to wash when necessary, rather than just following the directions on the bottle.

You also don’t have to follow the directions and indications for use on the package exactly, as it is just a general usage guideline. A good rule of washing hair is to apply the shampoo to your scalp and massage gently. Instead of rubbing the shampoo on the top of your head, spread it out evenly all over. It is not necessary for you to produce lather. It is also important to know that although hair shedding seems to be more apparent when you shampoo, the reality is that it would be likely to fall out soon anyway, though washing the hair gently wouldn’t hurt. As for conditioners, use it only on the hair shafts. The trick is to leave it on for 3-5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.

As for the difference in rinsing shampoo with cold or hot water — hot water is believed to be more capable of removing natural oils compared to cold water. It opens up the pores to clean out the oils more effectively. Make sure to rinse all the shampoo or conditioner out thoroughly, as unwashed residue left on your scalp can damage your hair. Finally, it might serve you well not to rub your hair with a towel too roughly, andto comb it while it is still wet, rather than waiting until the hair is dried and tangled.

While hair wash habits are unlikely to bring on hair loss, following these simple basic tips may help minimize hair shedding. At the very least, proper hair-washing can ensure your hair stays clean, and thus maintaining the condition of your scalp and the overall health of your hair.

It’s assumed that everybody wants to have voluminous, beautiful and healthy locks. Made of a protein called keratin, hair grows at an approximate rate of one inch per month, or around six feet of hair every year. However, individual hair follicles are also continuously falling out, a part of the natural growth process. Stress and environmental pollution can worsen this process, making hair loss and bald patches a common problem for people in their 30’s and even sooner for some, in their 20s.

While hereditary hair loss cannot be prevented, it can possibly be slowed down. And for people not suffering from genetic hair loss, these are some Hair Growth Tips from Bosley experts, you can follow:

A healthy diet: As mentioned above, hair is made up of proteins, making healthy dieting a major concern for anyone worried about their hair. A complete diet should consist of lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, eggs, fish, and nuts. Food with rich, fatty acid can boost hair growth. It’s also important to stay properly hydrated. The operative word here is water, and that means avoiding coffee, tea and alcohol as much as possible, or consuming them in moderation.

Use Less Harsh Hair Products or less usage of hair tools: Shampoos, conditioners , hair dryers and straighteners have become virtually ubiquitous in Western life. However, we tend to ignore the detrimental effects of this dependence. Some shampoos and conditioners can be harsh to sensitive scalps, so if the hair products cause irritation, be sure to switch to products with less chemicals. Hair tools such as flat & curling irons and hair dryers can overheat and cause hair shafts to become weak and brittle. Over time, continuous breakage can thin the hair. While its probably impossible to drop the use of hair products & tools altogether, reducing your exposure and usage can help.

Drinking Green tea: According to scientists, green tea contains compounds that improve circulation and stimulate your cardiovascular activities, encouraging hair growth.

Sleep Well: Stress is one of the root causes of hair loss. Although it’s often difficult to get enough sleep, health experts suggest that a lack of sleep can lead to stress resulting in a number of severe health problems. Inadequate sleep has been thought to spur the onset of male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss.

Avoid eating processed food: Processed foods are often sorely lacking in essential nutrients and minerals. A dependence on processed food means your body won’t be getting the fuel it needs to stay healthy, often leading to hair loss.

Take a walk: This is no time to be standing around! Limit your use of elevators, park at the back of the parking lot and walk to the store. Heck, go for a walk around the neighborhood. A brisk fifteen minute walk can increase your heart rate and your blood circulation, important elements of a healthy head of hair and overall health.

These tips are basic recommendations for one’s overall physical health. When one’s health is jeopardized, hair loss is typically one of the first signs of that so it goes to reason that keeping your overall physique healthy can also keep your hair healthy, for the most part (for people with hereditary hair loss, unfortunately nothing can stop or reverse that).

While these tips can solve some hair thinning and loss conditions, they are not offered as foolproof or by any means permanent solutuins to hair loss, especially if the hair loss is genetic (male and female pattern baldness). Bosley always recommends that you seek your physicians to determine your causes of hair loss, before seeking the appropriate treatments.

In the past, people often had not much options but to be content with and accept their bodies and the changes that occur to them. Today, thanks to advances made in health science, we are allowed to change the way we look and feel if we choose to, instead of helplessly accepting the changes. Hair transplantation, rare even a decade ago, has been gaining in popularity and continues to do so ; thanks in large part to sophisticated methods and techniques that have recently become available.

Bosley Medical, the world’s most experienced hair restoration expert, began their work in the in the field in 1974. Bosley’s hair transplantation procedure, employing the exclusive Micrograft® process, is able to offer patients natural looking results. A thorough consultation should precede any hair transplantation procedure – this is where the patient reviews basic information about the procedure, such as the techniques involved, and if the procedure is right for their particular circumstance. It is necessary for a patient to fully understand about the hair transplantation procedure.

An overview of hair transplantation:

Donor: You are your own hair’s donor, since the body will not accept a hair transplant from another person without the intake of immune–suppressant drugs. However, an identical twin with the same genetic make-up can donate to their own twin. However, twins are likely to experience hair loss together, so each might want to keep their donor hair for their individual hair transplant procedure.

Donor areas: Hair loss follows a pattern in both men and women. This is why it is common to see hair on the sides and back of the head despite large bald spots in the front and crown areas. The areas containing hair are considered donor areas, where follicles are harvested and selected surrounding tissues are removed.

Let’s talk a bit about hair quality and its impact on the quality of hair transplantation. Hair density has a large impact on the quality of hair transplants. Higher density translates to results that are more satisfactory. However, regardless of hair density, hair transplantation can be done on anyone with enough donor hair.

A number of factors determine the number of procedures that may be required, and these factors will often differ from person to person. Factors include the extent of a patient’s hair loss, the amount of donor hair available, patient expectations, and more. Most cases require one or two hair transplants.

Texture is another important consideration. Coarse hair is bulkier and can be transplanted in larger quantities, making for an easier procedure. However, fine hair has the advantage of offering a more natural looking result. Wavy and curly hair has the advantage of covering more area compared with straight hair.

We hope we’ve answered some common questions about hair transplantation. Patients should always seek a doctor’s consultation regarding the hair transplantation procedure, and the techniques involved.

Immediately following hair transplant surgery, it’s normal for a patient to feel excited and anxious. While these feelings are perfectly natural, it’s important to pay special attention to the precautions and care that are necessary in the post-surgery maintenance phase. Regardless of the success of an operation, patients would do well to follow the direction of their physicians, despite the possibility of overwhelming feelings and excitement after surgery.

Bosley Medical, the world’s most experienced hair restoration expert, provides patients with an easy to follow set of post procedure guidelines. Patients are advised to thoroughly study the post-care guidelines and follow to exacting specifications. Since it can be virtually impossible to remember every single precautionary step and direction given by a physician, these post-care instructions are invaluable.

A few things to keep in mind:

Be careful not to overdo it with pain medication. Generally, the recommended dosage is meant for two days. However, this dose can differ from patient to patient. At times, the physician may simply recommend an extra strength Tylenol.

Sleeping medications are sometimes recommended for individuals who experience discomfort sleeping post-surgery.

Sleep in an elevated position by propping up a pillow. Doing so will allow you to get a good night’s rest without disturbing the area affected by surgery.

It is necessary to wash your hair regularly after surgery. Patients often avoid doing so, believing washing will interfere with the transplantation process and result in hair loss. Quite the contrary, washing will prevent the formation of scabs over the recipient and donor areas, making it crucial to wash your hair.

Take care to keep the recipient and donor areas lubricated, as doing so will alleviate irritation and speed the healing process. Physicians may also recommend the application of Graftcycle or another saline solution. Antibiotic ointments may also be used.

Try not to perspire too much, as sweat can irritate the scalp immediately after the procedure, or before it heals. For the first month, Bosley recommends that the patients keep to less strenuous exercises and to stay away from direct sunlight. Once the transplanted areas start healing, one can resume all activities.

Temporary hair loss, a process known as anagen effluvium, is common after the transplantation process. There is no need to panic: newly transplanted hair often falls away within the first 3 to 8 weeks, since the hair restoration process will take hold within 3 to 6 months after the operation. Changes in hair texture, experienced by some individuals, is temporary and should swing back to normal within twelve to eighteen months. Patients should follow all precautionary steps and follow the orders given by their physician.

Bosley Medical has an expert team of physicians and counselors who guide their patients throughout the process.
