Does Ethnicity Influence Hair Loss?

Hereditary hair loss is different for all ethnic groups. The four types of hair by geographic origin are European, African, East and West Asian. Europeans usually have the thickest hair with the most individual hair follicles. African hair is generally composed of thicker individual hairs but with fewer hair follicles. Asian hair tends to be the strongest and easiest hair to care for; West Asian hair is thicker while East Asian hair is thinner.  Knowing these basic facts about your hair can help you understand the risk and type of hair loss you might experience.

People with European hair are more likely to start losing hair earlier in life while African hair loss typically starts in the fifties, and Asian hair loss tends to happen much later in life, if at all. Classic male pattern baldness is most common for people of European descent; however, all ethnicities are not completely exempt from this problem. Other ethnicities who are also at significant risk are people who derive from the Middle East and Indian nations.

If you think you are experiencing hair loss, you should consult with your physician first. Hair loss is more on an individual level than one that can be generalized across ethnic groups. More than ethnicity, hair loss is hereditary so your racial and ethnic background should not be the determining factor.
